- To understand the theological significance of God’s Word.
- To apply God’s Word to our relationships with each other.
- To learn God’s Word so that we can be adequately equipped as Believers.
- To help others know and learn its truth.
- To live our lives better as Kingdom citizens.

- To learn the Word so that we may use it to enlighten a needy world.
- To be able to handle the Word of God practically.
- To know the major themes of each book.
- To identify which part of the Bible applies to particular situations.
- Benefits of a Review:
- Review keeps us accountable to learning (we are committed to grow together)
- Review gives us a gauge to measure our growth in understanding (keep in mind, some of these questions are 2 years old! That means that you are RETAINING knowledge!)
- Review keeps learning fresh (even though you learned things months ago, review helps to keep things fairly fresh in your mind – truth needs to be relevant TODAY!)
- Review gives good practice for application of learned principles (someone will ask you what these stories were about – review helps to answer these questions before they come up outside of this setting)
- Review is encouraging (you are actually learning something!)
- Review: GENESIS (one question for each chapter)
- Can you name 2 or more of the 4 Creation Ordinances that we studied? (Creation / Sabbath, Marriage / Procreation, Geographical Distribution, Have Dominion)
- “Image” means that we look like God. (T/F?)
- What does it mean to be created in God’s Image? (We “represent” God in moral responsibility, rationality, and volition, we can have relationships, our lives are a struggle to re-define the image of God in our fallen image)
- We are “sinners” because we sin. (T/F?) (We are born sinners – Pelagius / Charles Finney / Roman Catholics [our nature was “weakened” by Adam, but we are sinners because we sin])
- If God created all things and evil exists, then did God create evil? If not, did Satan create evil? (Sept.9,2001 lesson) (Satan can only destroy – evil is the destruction of God’s good Creation / There can be no evil without the good) (God gave man the power of “contrary choice”)
- When man sinned, what hope was immediately given to him? (protoevangelium)
- What is the best example of the Holy Trinity that we have available to us as humans? (Marriage relationship)
- What is the purpose of the Image Bearer? (Reflect God’s likeness upon the earth)
- What was Cain’s punishment for murdering Abel? How was God’s grace still apparent even after passing this judgment? (Banishment – God gave him a “sign” so that no one could kill him)
- Can you give 2 explanations as to who the “sons of the gods” were in Genesis 6? (Angels / ruling lords / giants / descendants of Shem / etc.)
- Why did God flood the earth in Genesis 6? (Wickedness & especially violence)
- What was the “key phrase” in the Noah narrative? (8:1 – God remembered Noah / the chiasm points to it)
- Can you explain how the Hebrew writer would use a “chiasm” (like the Flood or Babel narrative)? The main meaning was in the phrase: “The Lord came down…”
- What was the great “sin” at Babel? (There are 4 possibilities that we studied) Make a name for themselves / Not disperse like God commanded / Desire to become “like God” – to be like Him in power / Prevent God from bringing death through another flood (they would build higher than the water would flow)
- Abraham is commended for something in Scripture, what was it? Where did Abraham gain this reputation? (leaving his home without knowing where God was taking him, sacrificing Isaac)
- Abraham kept failing in one particular area in his life (at least 2x’s), what was it? (hint: It involved his cute 90-year-old wife) (lying)
- God made a promise to Abraham that was conditional. (T/F?) (False – regardless of what Abraham did, he would be blessed)
2What was the sign of the Abrahamic Covenant? (Circumcision)
- Why would Lot have been reluctant to leave Sodom? (He had a place of prominence there / He didn’t realize the destructive level of the sin around him / He was complacent)
- Where did Abraham get a lot of his wealth? (Kings who asked him to leave their land)
3What was Abraham and Hagar’s son’s name? (Ishmael)
- Why did Sarah call her first son “Isaac”? ((Yitzach = Isaac, meaning laughter / she laughed at the unbelievable blessing of the lord)
- What did Sarah call the Lord when she had Isaac? Why? (El shaddai = The God who bends Creation)
- Can you explain why it can be assumed that Isaac was obedient when Abraham was about to sacrifice him? (Abraham was 113 / Isaac walked for 3 days / etc.)
- What was Abraham’s greatest request to his servant who was looking for a wife for Isaac? (Same tribe)
- Rebekah had a brother who tricked Isaac into marrying his other sister, Leah. What was that brother’s name and what do we know most about him? (Laban / he was money hungry)
- What does Jacob’s name bring to mind to all who read it? Why? (Yacov – swindler)
- How did Jacob steal his birthright? How did Jacob steal Esau’s blessing? (Birthright = stew / Blessing = dressed up like Esau)
- Was Esau to blame for having his birthright “stolen”? (yes, the Bible says that he “despised” his birthright)
- How did Esau respond when he found out that Jacob swindled him out of his blessing? (began hunting down Jacob to kill him)
- Jacob had a re-affirmation of God that he was indeed the Chosen One through whom the blessing would come (even though he swindled his father to get it). What was that affirmation? (Hint: it happened outside on his first night) - the ladder with angels going up and down
- Who was the wife that Jacob loved the most? (Rachel)
- How did Leah try to feel “loved” by her husband? (She kept having children – and named them accordingly)
- Why was Rachel unhappy in her marriage? (Jacob never had sons through her)
- How did Jacob get away from Laban? (He bargained with him for sheep)
- What did Rachel steal from her father, Laban, before she left home? Why was this thing so important to her? (idol / told the future / held inheritance rights / protection symbol / fertility guarantee)
Esau has been terribly taken advantage of by his brother, Jacob. Why are we so impressed with Esau at the end of the brother’s story together? (He forgave him) How is this a picture of Jesus Christ?
- Can you describe what happened with the sons of Jacob at Shechem? Why did they behave this way? (Dina was kidnapped)
- Who was Joseph’s real mother? (Rachel)
- How was it obvious that God’s hand was on Joseph right from the beginning of the Joseph narrative? (the dreams)
- How come the Bible says that Joseph was sold to Ishmaelites in one place and Mideanites in another place? (Mideanites were probably a part of the Ishmaelite tribe / Mideanites were the “wandering” part of the Ishmaelite descendants)
- Can you describe Joseph’s coat? What made it so special? (None of the other boys had one / chiffon-style, special material)
- Joseph used a phrase that easily explains why he did not sin with Potiphar’s wife. What was that phrase? (How can I do this thing and sin against God?)
- What phrase keeps reoccurring in the story of Joseph that gives us the key to his success? (“The Lord was with Joseph”)
- Who were the 2 men in prison with Joseph and why were they there? (Baker and cupbearer / no one knows why they were there)
- Once Joseph is finally out of prison, his brothers show up to ask him for food. Why didn’t Joseph introduce himself to them or help them right away? (He wanted to see if their character had changed)
- Which one of the brothers did Joseph treat better than the others? Why? How? (Benjamin / because he was the other son of Rebekah / he gave him more food, sat him in the better spot, gave him more gold)
- How did Joseph know that the brothers had changed? (Judah offers himself as a sacrifice so that Benjamin could be freed / the others voluntarily went back to Egypt instead of running free)
- Judah shows great respect for his father in his speech to Joseph begging for Benjamin’s release by naming Jacob several times. Why is this surprising? (Jacob never acknowledged that they were his sons – only Joseph and Benjamin)
- Finally, when Joseph did help his brothers, he became a fantastic picture of Jesus Christ…in what way? (Forgiveness)
What do you Know?
