1Laws of the Sanctuary

  • The next 7 chapters contain the details for the construction of the tabernacle. Why do you think this takes up so much space?

  • The construction of the tabernacle was to be specific and detailed. Exodus 25:1-9
    • The manipulation of materials was to be carried out in detail.
    • The actual material was to be specific. (And wholly voluntary!)
    • The articles were of a certain material.
    • “Fine linen” –
    • “Sea cows” –
    • “Acacia wood” –
    • “Oil and Spices” –
    • The sanctuary was to be a “pattern” for God’s dwelling.
    • Take Note: The voluntary character of the people.
    • They were not required to give – they were asked to give.
    • How does this describe the heart of God?

    • The Ark
    • The ark was a holy object. (Exodus 25:10-11, 16)
    • What was in the Ark of the Covenant?

    • The ark would be the “seat of God.”
    • The ark was the only piece of furniture in the Holy of Holies.
    • The ark would have specific dimensions.
    • “Cubit” = length of a forearm
    • Approximately 3 feet, 9 inches long / 2 feet, 3 inches wide / 2 feet, 3 inches high.
    • The ark would be covered with pure gold
  • The ark was never to be touched – not even by the ground. Exodus 25:12-15
  • The lid of the ark would be the representation of the ‘seat’ of God among His people. Exodus 25:17-22

2The Table of Shewbread

  • Where did the name “showbread” come from?

  • The table, like the ark, was to be overlaid with pure gold and carried with poles. Exodus 25:23-28
  • The items on the table bore significance as well. Exodus 25:29-30
    • The vessels are all specific in detail – they were not household objects.
    • Bread was to be on the table at all times.
    • There were loaves (Lev.24:5-9) arranged in .
    • Every Sabbath, the loaves were to be replaced.
    • The priests would eat the old loaves within the walls of the sanctuary.
    • The Menorah
  • The lampstand is now described in detail. Exodus 25:31-36

3Lampstand = “m,norah” in Hebrew

  • The construction of the lampstand (menorah) resembles a tree. It serves as a metaphor for the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden.
  • The menorah is to be hammered out of one piece of pure gold.
  • The items to work the menorah are described. Exodus 25:37-40
    • “Snuffers” – a tong to pull up the wick.
    • “Snuff dishes” – pans to hold the used wicks.
    • 1 talent = 3,000 shekles? That means that the weight of the lampstand would equal anything from 52.8 lbs. to 79.2 lbs. of pure gold.
